What: Feel the Feelings: Exploring Social and Emotional Development Through Poetry

With an increasing need to address social and emotional development in elementary-age children, this session will highlight poetic texts as a window to an internal landscape. Poetry evokes emotions because it is a multisensory experience, making words come alive by engaging readers’ and listeners’ senses. Imagery appeals to the senses of sight, touch, and taste. Rhythm, meter, patterns of language, and poetic devices such as onomatopoeia, alliteration and assonance appeal to the sense of hearing. Reading and writing poetry opens up conversations about emotions.
